What Does the Shape Say?

Grade Level(s): Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.B.4: Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/"corners") and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length)

Targeted Needs of Student:
Analyzing shapes and their similarities and differences, recognizing shapes of different sizes, understanding speech bubbles

Goal:
Providing students with understanding of shapes and how they are similar and different.

Materials Needed:

  1. Construction Paper
  2. Markers or other writing utensils
  3. Glue
  4. Chart paper
  5. Googley eyes

Explanation/Summary:
Students will each be given a shape and asked what it would say to other shapes. In the speech bubbles that are provided, the students will write characteristics of that shape that make it different and similar to other shapes. For instance, a pentagon might say “I am a pentagon and I have five points. I am not a quadrilateral.”
