My Schedule Pie Chart
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Area: Process Area:
Numbers and
Operations Problem-Solving
Algebra Reasoning
and Proof
Geometry Communication
Measurement Representation
Data
Analysis, Statistics, and Probability Connections
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.D.10:
Draw a
picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set
with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare
problems1 using information presented in a bar graph.
Targeted Needs of Student:
Representing
data using a pie graph, relating time to probability and data analysis, talking
about time management, reading graphs, working with fractions
Goal:
Representing
data and connecting this data to probability and fractions (part of a whole.)
Materials Needed:
- Paper
- Coloring utensils
- rulers
Explanation/Summary:
Using their
schedule during the day, students will construct a pie graph with the data
representing what they do during the day. The teacher should show an example
and then walk through what her day looks like on a pie graph and then direct
the students to make their own. Also the teacher should instruct the students
about what slice of her pie graph represents in percentage. For example, the
teacher might sleep 8 hours during the day which is 8/24 hours or ¼ of her day
which makes 25%. After students have made their pie graph, they can share with
other students and talk about percentages. This activity would last over a
couple of days.
