Key Measurement

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.B.4: Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units— whole numbers, halves, or quarters.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Measuring to the nearest quarter inch, using rulers, graphing data, analyzing data

Goal:
To provide students with practice graphing and interpreting data

Materials Needed:


1.      Worksheets




Explanation/Summary:
Students will first measure the keys to the nearest inch, quarter inch, or fourth inch. Then they will record the data on the line plot provided at the top of the page. Then the teacher can facilitate discussion around the data.

Splash Math is a worksheet app that can be bought for different grades. Students can use this app to maintain knowledge at home or the teacher can assign work on this app for individual work in the classroom.

Brain Pop App

Explanation/Summary:
This app is very versatile for multiple math concepts and even science, social studies, and language arts. BrainPOP first gives students a video to watch and then it assesses them on what they know. When monitored, students can use this to learn or practice math concepts at home or at school.

Explanation/Summary:
The teacher will read the book Spaghetti and Meatballs for All and then she will make a chart on post it note paper. As a class, the students and the teacher will determine the perimeter and area for the table arrangements that are stated in the book. Each page adds more people to the amount of guests eating spaghetti, so there are many opportunities to find the area of the tables and the perimeter. The chart can be set up of guests seated, total number of guests, table arrangement, and then the perimeter and area of the tables.

Explanation/Summary:
After the teacher models, students will each use a Pentominoe to find the perimeter. They will trace the pentominoe and then count the amount of units to find the perimeter. These shapes are each very different and not symmetrical, so students will have to work individually on their shape.

Volume with Cubes

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.C.3: Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement.
·         CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.C.3.A: A cube with side length 1 unit, called a "unit cube," is said to have "one cubic unit" of volume, and can be used to measure volume.
·         CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.C.3.B: A solid figure which can be packed without gaps or overlaps using n unit cubes is said to have a volume of n cubic units.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Finding the volume of an object, understanding length, width, and height, building three dimensional shapes from a two dimensional outline, measuring attributes of a shape, using units to find volume

Goal:
To provide students with a concreate way of understanding how to measure volume

Materials Needed:


1.      Unifix Cubes
2.      Outlines
3.      Marker
4.      Scratch paper
5.      Scissors
6.      Clear tape




Explanation/Summary:
Students will cut out the outline for the foldable and then they will label the middle rectangle as “base.” Then they will label three of the other rectangles as “height,” “length,” and “width.” Then the students will fold the rectangles up to create a prism without a top. The teacher will give the students tape to keep the cube together and she will also give them unifix cubes. Students then can try and fit as many cubes as they can inside the prism. This represents the volume and the teacher can facilitate discussion about volume, area, and perimeter using the prism.

What Time is it?

Goal:
To provide students with practice determining the time of clocks showing hours and half-hours

Materials Needed:

Explanation/Summary:
The teacher will give the students the worksheet and then they will look at the clock and write the time in the space provided underneath. Students will have to use their understanding of which hand tells what number to write down. This can be done in a worksheet fashion or the teacher can cut up the clocks as cards, laminate the cards and have them used in centers.

Explanation/Summary:
The teacher will post clocks around the classroom and then allow students to walk around and write the time on the appropriate part of their worksheet. Each clock has a letter assigned to it where the student will write the time next to that letter.

Volume Bingo

Targeted Needs of Student:
Finding volume of many different objects, working with mathematical language such as “prisms,” a fun way to test and practice knowledge of volume, review of volume

Goal:
To provide students with practice finding volume of many objects  

Materials Needed:


1.      Volume Bingo board
2.      Pieces to place over squares
3.      Volume cards to call out



Explanation/Summary:
The teacher will pull a card and then students will find the volume of the prism on the cards. Then the students will look for the volume amount on their Bingo Cards. When they find it, they cover the amount up on their card.
