Venn Diagram of Data

Grade Level(s): 1st Grade – 6th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.C.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Collecting data, comparing data, learning how to use Venn diagrams, reading

Goal:
Collecting data and comparing data

Materials Needed:

1.      Three circles of different colors
2.      Labels on the circles
3.      Question posted at top
4.      Objects to place in diagram

Explanation/Summary:
When students come in to the classroom or when they have individual work, they will go over to the table and answer the question that is on the table. To answer the question, they will put a small object (teacher will have objects to use out on the table) in the circles that apply to them. For instance, they might have the question “What kind of pets do you have?” and the circles will be labeled “dog,” “cat”, and “bird.” The students will put the object in the circles that apply to them. Later, the class will discuss the data together or in pairs.
