Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.B.3: Tell and write time in
hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.7: Tell and write time from
analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.
Targeted Needs of Student:
Counting by
5’s, telling time to the nearest five minutes, relating clocks to number lines,
understanding hours and minutes
Goal:
Providing
students with connections of a number line to a clock while instructing
students to tell time to the nearest five minutes
Materials Needed:
- Unifix cubes
- Poster paper
- Marker
Explanation/Summary:
First the
teacher will use unifix cubes to show what a group of five looks like. Then by
adding groups of five with the unifix cubes, the teacher will construct a line
of 60 unifix cubes. She will label the fives by writing 5, 10, 15….over the
corresponding groups of five down the number line. Students will then help to
turn the number line into a circle where 0 connects to 60 and place this circle
on a posterboard. Break apart the groups of 5 to show how by counting by 5, we
can go from 0 to 60. Then label the poster with the corresponding numbers and
add an hour and minute hand in the middle. This is now a clock!
