Back to School Desk Arranging

Grade Level(s):  2nd Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.OA.A.3: Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Exploring mathematical possibilities regarding multiplication, visual and tactile representation of fact families, real world representation of arrays and multiplication, pairing of two groups

Goal:
To allow students to explore the possibilities of multiplication with whole numbers in the context of a classroom

Materials Needed:

  1. Desks
  2. Coloring utensils
  3. Paper or poster paper

Explanation/Summary:
Students will be given a word problem about the teacher needing to arrange her classroom desks. She has so many numbers of boys and girls and students are challenged to place the desks in small groups taking into account gender. When they arrange the desks, they can do this by drawing it on a blank template of the class. Then, they must explain to the teacher why they arranged the desks this way and why it will work for the teacher’s classroom.
