CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.C.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another

Targeted Needs of Student:
Counting, comparing data, interpreting data and discussing data as a class, comprehending questions, reading

Goal:
Organizing data and comparing results

Materials Needed:
1.      Scale with clear sides
2.      Small objects that are heavy enough to make the scale tip
3.      Question cards
4.      Labels on or near the scale sides

Explanation/Summary:
As students enter the classroom, they will have a question on a table with a scale. To answer the question, they will take a small object (any type of manipulative that the teacher chooses) and place it in the side of the scale that corresponds to their answer. For instance, if the question is “do you have a pet?” then if the student does have a pet, he would put the object in the side of the scale labeled “yes.” Then, after every student has done the activity, the teacher will discuss the data with the class.
