Bar Graph Question Activity

Grade Level(s): 3rd Grade – 6th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                          Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.B.3 Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Reading, comprehending questions, interpreting data, visually representing data in a hands-on way, measuring amounts, following directions

Goal:
Charting data and interpreting data

Materials Needed:

1.      Poster Board
2.      String
3.      Scissors
4.      Labels on poster for choices
5.      Question at the top of the board
6.      Ruler
7.      Glue

Explanation/Summary:
Students will individually complete this activity as they come in the classroom or during centers. They will answer the question such as “What is your favorite sport?” and then they will cut one inch of string and glue that piece of string on the poster board provided over the selection that they have chosen. They should line the strings up so that they are tall on the board. When dry, the strings will make a bar graph to show the classroom and then as a class, the teacher will discuss the data.
