Powers of 10 Flap Books

Grade Level(s): 5th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.2: Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Multiplying and dividing by 10, understanding decimal movement, working with equations, practicing place value

Goal:
Connecting students’ understanding of multiplying by ten and what this does to a number’s place value

Materials Needed:

  1. Coloring utensils
  2. Printed foldable (or have students create foldable)
  3. Writing utensils
  4. Scissors

Explanation/Summary:
After cutting the flaps of the foldable, students will determine the answer to multiple multiplication problems that are when a number is multiplied by ten on a foldable. The teacher should allow students to discuss what happens to the decimal point each level on the foldable and the students should observe that the decimal point moves each time.
