Popsicle Angles

Grade Level(s): 4th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.C.5: Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint, and understand concepts of angle measurement:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.C.6: Measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor. Sketch angles of specified measure.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Representing angles through sketches, understanding the characteristics of angles, mathematical vocabulary (perpendicular, acute, obtuse, intersecting)

Goal:
Providing students with practice representing angles of different measurements

Materials Needed:

  1. Popsicle sticks
  2. Protractors
  3. Markers
  4. Paper
  5. Rulers
  6. Glue

Explanation/Summary:
First students will sketch out many angles (intersecting, perpendicular, right, obtuse, acute, etc.) and then they will glue popsicle sticks over the sketches to represent straight lines. Then, they will measure the angles to determine if it is the correct degrees for each angle and then label each angle. These can be used for reference sheets for students, assessment to see student understanding, individual or group work.
