Grade Level(s):  4th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.6: Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Understanding long division, practicing the procedure of long division, understanding placement of numbers, learning the relation of numbers in division

Goal:
Providing students with a color-coded representation of the reasoning behind long division.

Materials Needed:

  1. Post it notes (three colors)
  2. White board with a marker

Explanation/Summary:
While explaining long division to students, the teacher will first write the digits for both the divisor (color one) and the dividend (color two). Then the teacher will start to subtract and the difference will be on a different color post it note (color three). Each time a number is brought down, an arrow will be drawn. This will be repeated until the end of the problem.
