Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.B.3 Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Practicing representing and reading time on a clock, practicing skip counting by fives, understanding the minute and hour hands of a clock, quick understanding of the hour to minutes (7 on a clock means 35 minutes)

Goal:
Providing students with practice telling time on a clock

Materials Needed:

1.      Two paper plates per students
2.      Writing utensils
3.      Glue
4.      One brad per student
5.      Colored paper for hands of the clock
6.      Hole punch to attach brads

Explanation/Summary:
Students will construct a clock with two layers by first taking a paper plate and writing the numbers 1-12 for the hours of the clock. Then, they will use a second paper plate and write the minutes of the clock in five minute intervals from 0-55. Teachers must make sure to have students line up the place of the hour on the first plate to the place of the corresponding minutes on the second clock. This should line up the minutes with the hours when students place the first place on top of the second plate. Next the teacher will have the students cut two inch slits around the first plate ONLY to create tabs. This way, when the students glue the plates together, they can lift an hour flap to see the amount of minutes underneath. For instance, when the clock is at 5:35, the minute hand will be pointing towards the 7 on the front of the clock, but students can lift the flap and see 35 underneath. Next, attach the two hands of the clock with a brad and have the students show what time it is by moving the hands of the clock. This is a great assessment because teachers can ask the entire class to show certain time on their clock and then she can easily see who is understanding and who needs more instruction.
