Hula Hoop Time

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.B.3 Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Practicing representing and reading time on a clock, practicing skip counting by fives, understanding the minute and hour hands of a clock

Goal:
Providing students with practice telling time on a clock

Materials Needed:


1.      Labels for minutes and hours
2.      Hands of the clock out of pieces of paper or sticks
3.      Hula hoop
4.      Index cards with times written on them




Explanation/Summary:
Students will use a hula hoop as a clock with labels in five minute increments on the outside of the hoop and then the hours from 1- 12 on the inside of the hoop. (Note: Taping down the labels with blue painter’s tape might be helpful.) In the middle of the hula hoop, have a middle circle with two pointers or long pieces of paper to use as the hands of the clock. Students will draw cards of different times and they have to represent the time on the hula hoop clock.
