Orangamallows

Grade Level(s): 6th  Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                                       Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.A.3: Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3 (2 + x) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3x; apply the distributive property to the expression 24x + 18y to produce the equivalent expression 6 (4x + 3y); apply properties of operations to y + y + y to produce the equivalent expression 3y.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Combining like terms, visual representation of combining like terms, understanding different terms

Goal:
Representing combining like terms using objects.

Materials Needed:

  1. Bag
  2. Oranges
  3. Marshmallows

Explanation/Summary:
Have a volunteer put 2 marshmallows in the bag and then put 3 marshmallows in the bag. Ask them what is in the bag. They should say 5 marshmallows. Then have ask a student to put 3 oranges and 2 marshmallows in a bag. Shake the bag. Ask the student what is in the bag. They should say 3 oranges and 2 marshmallows. Explain that using the reasoning from the first time, shouldn’t I say that there are 5 orangamallows? Explain that we can’t combine terms that are different, only like terms can be combined.
