Dream House Project

Grade Level(s): 3rd Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.C.7: Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Frequently multiplying, memorizing multiplication facts

Goal:
Providing students with practice multiplying using a game-type format.

Materials Needed:

  1. Deck of cards
  2. Game pieces
  3. Dice

Explanation/Summary:
Using a deck of cards, students will spiral the cards from the middle to the outside. Then using game pieces, they will move around the spiral. They roll the dice, multiply the number of the dice by the card the game piece is on and if they are correct, they move the number of spaces the dice showed and if they are not correct, they do not move until their next term. Students take turns until someone reaches the end.
