Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.A.1: Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Understanding exponents, representing exponents with repeated multiplication, learning to memorize certain exponent values, meaning of exponents

Goal:
Providing students with understanding of exponents and expanding exponents

Materials Needed:

  1. Strips of construction paper
  2. Markers
  3. Calculators

Explanation/Summary:
The teacher will create a foldable to show the students as an example. Then the teacher can assign students to make their own foldables for homework and can quiz classmates the next day. The foldable has a number with exponent on the left side of the strip of construction paper and then has the answer at the other end of the strip of construction paper. In between, the strip is folded the amount of times that the exponent says to multiply with the problem’s equivalent written out using multiplication. The teacher then has the students write out the problem on the back in word form.
