Grade Level(s): 5th – 6th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.B.3: Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Multiplying decimals, self checking, accuracy of mathematical problems

Goal:
Providing students with practice multiplying decimals.

Materials Needed:

  1. Form One and Two of the Battleship activity
  2. Scratch paper
  3. Writing utensils

Explanation/Summary:
Students will work in pairs where one student will have form one of the battleship activity and the other student will have form two. Form one contains the answers to form two which are located on the battleship and form one’s answers are located on form two’s battleship. When the first partner gets an answer they ask their partner if the number they discovered is on their battleship. If it is, their partner crosses off the number and they have been “hit.” Partners take turns until one partner has correctly multiplied their decimal problems and “sunk” their partner’s battleship.
