Long Division Mnemonic

Grade Level(s): Kindergarten – 1st Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.B.2: Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.B.3: Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Dividing using long division, remembering sequence of steps during a mathematical operation, creating a fun way to remember procedures

Goal:
Simplifying the procedures of long division to aid students in their ability to recall when solving problems.

Materials Needed:

  1. Hamburger cut outs
  2. Paper
  3. Coloring utensils
  4. Glue

Explanation/Summary:
Students will create a hamburger to represent the mnemonic “Does McDonalds Serve Burgers” to remember long division procedures. These procedures are Divide, Multiply, Subtract, and Bring Down. Students can keep this hamburger that has been labeled in their notebook to remember the procedures. Lso the hamburger can be used as a foldable that has Divide on the top bun, Multiply on the toppings, Subtract on the patty and Bring Down on the bottom bun. These flaps can have an example written on it to help students remember.
