Measurement Race

Grade Level(s): Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.K.MD.A.2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Learning how to collect data, measuring distances, counting units of measure, comparing two different lengths

Goal:
Comparing objects of different length

Materials Needed:
1.      Cars that launch in a forward direction
2.      Measuring tape

Explanation/Summary:
In pairs, students will race match box cars across a table or floor and then will record how far the car went. These cars need to be the ones that you roll back to then launch in a forward direction. Students will then write which car went the farthest and which went the shortest distance.
