Common Core Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.1 Verify experimentally the properties of rotations, reflections, and translations

Targeted Needs of Student:
Tracing, comparing translations and other ways of altering objects.

Goal:
Understanding transitions and how they are done

Materials Needed:

1.      Leaf cut outs (or real leaves during fall)
2.      One brad per student
3.      Markers (at least two different colors)
4.      Paper that has been divided into four equal rectangles

Explanation/Summary:
Using a leaf, students will trace a leaf onto a paper with four sections. They will show a “zero translation,” “slide/translation,” “flip/reflection,” and then “turn/rotation” by first tracing leaf they were given and then applying the translation to it, then tracing it again. For the turn/rotation of the leaf, they will need to stick a brad in the bottom of the leaf and then turn it. Each box should have two traces, one in one color to show the original leaf and then then after the translation they should trace the leaf in another color. Note: a model to show the students would be very helpful.
