Common Core Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Adding, subtracting, and understanding equations

Goal:
Practicing adding and subtracting numbers in regards to an equation

Materials Needed:

1.      Legos
2.      Blank equation worksheet
3.      Something to write with

Explanation/Summary:
Students will be given a handful of legos and a work sheet with blank equations on it (     + or -       =      .) Then, they will have to place a lego in each of the first two spaces and add or subtract to find and right the answer at the end. To be sure that they have gotten the right answer, be sure to have them write in how many each of the legos represented. For instance, they might have a lego with 10 dots on it that is being added to a lego with 6 dots on it. Students will need to write 10 on the space where the lego was and a 6 where the second lego was and then 16 as the answer after the equal sign.
