Greater Than/Less Than Legos

Grade Level(s): Kindergarten – 1st Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.C.6: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Counting numbers, representing numbers, using symbols to compare and contrast numbers, visually representing numbers and equations.

Goal:
To compare numbers using objects and mathematical symbols.

Materials Needed:

  1. Legos
  2. Number cards or blank paper

Explanation/Summary:
Using legos, students will build one single tower of one color legos and then another single tower with another color. They will write the number of the blocks under each tower and decide which number is greater than the other. This is great for centers, individual work, or during a lesson on comparing numbers. Students can also be given a mathematical expression such as “9 > 4” and asked to represent it.
