Pizza Fractions

Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.3: Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Introducing fractions, representing fractions, partitioning circles, understanding parts of a whole, learning equality in fractions, using fraction language

Goal:
Providing students with practice partitioning circles and representing fractions.

Materials Needed:

  1. Red and yellow circles of construction paper
  2. Scissors
  3. Pizza toppings made of construction paper
  4. Markers
  5. Glue

Explanation/Summary:
Students will create a pizza with six slices out of two circles of construction paper. Then they will use paper toppings to decorate their pizza. The top circular piece will be cut as flaps and will be folded up where students will write what fraction of their pizza has each topping. Then they will present the pizzas to a partner using mathematical language such as “one half” or “two sixths.”
