Christmas Tree Math

Grade Level(s):  Kindergarten

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.1: Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Using mathematical language such as “longer” and “shorter,” comparing objects by length, ordering objects by length, understanding how to describe an object

Goal:
Connecting students understanding of nature to comparing objects.

Materials Needed:

  1. Construction paper (green, yellow, and brown)
  2. Stickers and other decorations
  3. longer and shorter labels
  4. glue
  5. large construction paper

Explanation/Summary:
Students will be given strips of green construction paper (around 10) that are in various lengths. They will arrange them from shortest to longest to create a tree (they can make it a Christmas tree if they wish with the yellow star at the top). Then they will be asked to describe the strips and how they are different.
