Symmetry Construction

Grade Level(s): 4th and 5th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.3: Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Reviewing, assessing, or practicing symmetry, introducing translations, building irregular shapes, understanding the line of symmetry.

Goal:
Providing students with a way to kinesthetically represent symmetrical shapes.

Materials Needed:

  1. Pattern blocks (enough for each student to have a lot
  2. Ruler for each student

Explanation/Summary:
Students will use pattern blocks to make shapes. They must use a ruler to divide the shape and make the shape symmetrical. This activity can be used for centers, as a whole class instruction to reinforce symmetry, or as individual work. This is great for a quick assessment to see if students understand symmetry and also it can be used to understand translations.
