Grade Level(s):  2nd Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.5: Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Seeing a concrete representation of regrouping, understanding place value in the context of adding, learning the procedures of regrouping

Goal:
Providing students with a concrete example of regrouping using manipulatives.

Materials Needed:

  1. Unifix cubes
  2. Place Value mat

Explanation/Summary:
Students will be given a place value chart that has ones and tens clearly labeled. Then they will be given a problem that requires regrouping such as 26 x 2. Students will first count the amount of unifix cubes in the ones column and then they will determine if they have more than 9. If so, they will combine 10 cubes and carry these unifix cubes to the tens column. Then they will count the unifix cubes in the tens column and determine their answer.
