Marshmallow Math

Grade Level(s): Kindergarten – 1st Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.3 Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects)
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2)

Targeted Needs of Student:
Practicing addition, working with equations, visual representation of addition, writing word problems

Goal:
Providing students with practicing counting and writing equations

Materials Needed:

1.      Flat large mugs out of paper
2.      Small marshmallows
3.      Writing utensils

Explanation/Summary:
Explanation/Summary: Students will count the amount of marshmallows placed on top of the paper mug. After counting, the mug has a blank space to have students write number sentences to show how they add or take away (maybe something like I added 5 marshmallows to 4 marshmallows to make 9 marshmallows) or have them write word problems about melting marshmallows.
