Flying Saucer Addition

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Adding, practicing fluently adding, kinesthetic option to drill practice, recognizing addition problems

Goal:
Providing students with addition practice.

Materials Needed:


  1. 25 cent prize pods
  2. Paper slips inside
  3. Bucket




Explanation/Summary:
At centers, students will have a bucket full of “flying saucers” or 25 cent machine prize pods where they will choose a saucer, read the addition problem inside, and find the answer. Each slip of paper in the saucers will have an addition problem but teachers can use subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. Alternate to a worksheet!
