Decomposing with Circles

Grade Level(s):  Kindergarten

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.3: Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).

Targeted Needs of Student:
Decomposing 5, exploring possibilities of ways to make 5, representing addition through coloring, introducing writing equations

Goal:
Representing how to add numbers to create five using various colors

Materials Needed:

  1. Two color markers
  2. Circle sheet
  3. counters or other manipulatives

Explanation/Summary:
Student will use two color markers to shade in circles that add to five. Before having the students show this, use two color counters or two color manipulatives to show that there are many ways to make five. On the paper, they will color in the circles and then they will write an equation underneath to show the addition problem. For instance, if they shaded in one dot pink and four dots green, then they would write “1 and 4 make 5” underneath.
