Ascending A

Grade Level(s):  Kindergarten – 5th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.C.6: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Remembering mathematical language, ordering numbers, ordering data, sequencing numbers, recognizing patterns in numbers

Goal:
Providing students with an easy way to remember what “Ascending” means

Materials Needed:

  1. Paper and Writing utensils

Explanation/Summary:
When explaining “ascending” and “descending,” the teacher can use this quick strategy to help students remember. The teacher will draw an A and then write tallies from the top to the bottom. The top of the A is smaller so there are less tallies and it grows to bigger amounts of tallies at the bottom, just like ascending numbers.
