Which is the Better Buy?

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8: Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?

Targeted Needs of Student:
Using multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction in real-world project, problem solving opportunities regarding money, determining the least amount

Goal:
To provide a real-world situation regarding buying products for the best amount

Materials Needed:


1.      Various objects
2.      Large Tags with money amounts on it
3.      Scratch Paper



Explanation/Summary:
Students will be shown the same object with different pricing and asked “Which is the better buy?” For instance, if I have a box of 5 Hot Pockets for $6.00 and two boxes of two Hot Pockets each for $4.00 each which is the better buy? Students will determine which is better based on how much will be paid.
