How Much Do I Need?

Grade Level(s):  3rd Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.A.2: Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l).1 Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the problem.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Developing life skills, understanding quantity and need for various amounts of people, measuring liquid volumes, using standard and nonstandard units, multiplying amounts of liquid

Goal:
To provide students with a real-world application of determining the quantity needed.

Materials Needed:

1.      Various sizes of containers (Gallon, cup, quart, pint, etc.)

Explanation/Summary:
Students will be given prompts that deal with how much is needed to feed a certain amount of people (such as a family, a family reunion, two people, one person, etc.) The teacher will hold up a gallon, a quart, pint, and a cup for reference and then ask “If I want to go get milk for my family of four people, how much milk would I need?” This can be repeated for food and other drinks.
