What’s in a Name Percentages

Grade Level(s):  3rd – 4th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.1: Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Linking fractions to percentages, understanding parts of a whole added together make the whole, analyzing data of shaded area

Goal:
To provide students with an individual way of measuring fractions and showing fractions out of a hundred

Materials Needed:

1.      Hundred Boards (enough for letters in each student’s name)
2.      Coloring Utensils
3.      Tape
4.      Large sheet paper
5.      Markers

Explanation/Summary:
Students will get a hundreds board for each letter in their name (longer names can go to the first 6 letters) and shade the boxes needed to make each letter. The letters should be in one color and the background color should be in another color. Then, they will count how many squares on the hundreds board it took to make each letter and write it out of one hundred. For each letter, they should have two fractions each out of one hundred that show how many squares it took to make each letter and how much it is left over. Then the teacher can discuss with students the percentage of colored squares needed to make each letter.
