Grade Level(s):  6th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.3.C: Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Categorizing objects, understanding parts of a whole, graphing data, finding the statistics of the classroom based on category, visually seeing a bar graph or line graph

Goal:
Visually representing categorical data and statically analyzing this data

Materials Needed:

1.      Large roll of paper
2.      Painter’s tape
3.      Labels to write categories

Explanation/Summary:
Students will sit around the teacher as she rolls out the paper that has a chart made with painters tape. Then they will all look at their shoes and come up with categories to be able to chart the shoe categories. They will place one shoe in the appropriate category and then discuss the data. They will find the percentage of students who have shoes with zippers, Velcro, laces, buckles, and other. Then they can graph the data. This can be done with something other than shoes.
