CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8: Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?

Targeted Needs of Student:
Understanding the representation of money, developing life skills, exploring money combinations

Goal:
Ongoing development of understanding of money

Materials Needed:

1.      Pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters (fake)
2.      Various objects to buy
3.      Cashier apron or nametag
4.      Cash register

Explanation/Summary:
In the classroom, there will be various objects such as erasers, pencils, paper, etc. that students can buy using money. They will have to find the exact amount and give the amount to the cashier (maybe a student of the month or something.) I would suggest using non-standard units that resemble the same amount of money at first or fake money and then progressing to money. Students can earn “money” through good deeds or outstanding work, etc.
