Money Match Up

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8: Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?

Targeted Needs of Student:
Exploring combination possibilities, finding the combination of the least amount of coins needed, kinesthetic way of working with the value of money, self-checking opportunities to make money combinations

Goal:
To provide students with practice finding the coin combination to make a certain amount of money.

Materials Needed:


1.      Match Game for each student
2.      Maybe fake or real money



Explanation/Summary:
Students will match money amounts to the way the amount can be represented with coins. They will either work individually or with a partner to match each card up. Each card uses the least amount of coins possible to make the amount. Students may want to use a manipulative of real or fake money to make the amount and then find the card that matches that.
