and Proof

Measurement Representation
Data Analysis,
Statistics, and Probability Connections
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NBT.A.1: Use place value
understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
Targeted Needs of Student:
Understanding
place value, rounding numbers, connecting mathematical concepts to previous
knowledge, kinesthetically teaching rounding
Goal:
To provide
students with a way to think of rounding and which number to go to
Materials Needed:
1. Mini Whiteboards
2. Tape
3. Steering Wheel
4. Expo Marker
Explanation/Summary:
On the carpet,
the teacher will make a number line out of tape. Then at every notch, she will
put whiteboards with numbers 0 to 100 counting by 10’s. Then, she will allow
one student to be the “driver” and he has to start at 0. The teacher will tell
the student to drive down the number line like he would be driving somewhere on
the highway. Every whiteboard with numbers are the exit numbers of the highway.
As they continue to drive, the teacher will tell the student to stop at 27 and
then ask students, “If you had to use the restroom and there are restrooms on
every exit, which exit would you go to in order to use the restroom? Which is
the closest?”
