Paper Protractor

Grade Level(s):  4th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.C.6: Measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor. Sketch angles of specified measure.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.C.7: Recognize angle measure as additive. When an angle is decomposed into non-overlapping parts, the angle measure of the whole is the sum of the angle measures of the parts. Solve addition and subtraction problems to find unknown angles on a diagram in real world and mathematical problems, e.g., by using an equation with a symbol for the unknown angle measure.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Recognizing the connections of many different angles, using something other than a basic protractor to find the degrees of an angle, using a triangle to explain degrees of angles, proving why these angles work through understanding of angle relationships

Goal:
Building student understanding of relationships between angles using another version of a protractor

Materials Needed:

  1. Square piece of paper
  2. Protractor
  3. Hard edge (maybe a ruler)
  4. Marker

Explanation/Summary:
Students will make a paper protractor by following the steps of making this protractor on the website listed below. When doing this, students will make a series of folds that represent certain angles including 15, 30, 60, 75, and 90 degrees. This can be used as a reference for finding angles or for proving why these angles work with the other angles to build understanding of angle relationships.
