Grade Level(s):  6th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.B.4: Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1-100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor. For example, express 36 + 8 as 4 (9 + 2).

Targeted Needs of Student:
Sorting numbers in ascending order, understanding multiples, pairing numbers and determining which one is least

Goal:
To provide students with a method of sorting numbers and finding the least common multiple.

Materials Needed:

  1. M cut outs
  2. Writing Utensils

Explanation/Summary:
Students will take two numbers and write them on the left and right top sides of the giant “M.” Then they will write the multiples down the side of the M’s and circle the common multiples. They will then write the LCM in the bottom middle of the giant “M.”
