Floor Area and Perimeter

CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.C.6 Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units)

Targeted Needs of Student:
Understanding perimeter and area, working with unusual shapes, counting, adding, multiplying

Goal:
Practicing finding perimeter and area of shapes

Materials Needed:


1.      Blue Painter’s Tape
2.      Hallway Space



Explanation/Summary:
The teacher will tape off shapes on the floor either in the classroom or in the hallway and then have the students measure the perimeter and area based on the blocks of floor tile.  Students can do this in math centers (one group at each shape) or have a few shapes all together be one math center.
