Exploring Capacity

Grade Level(s): Kindergarten

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Comparing and contrasting objects, using language to describe objects, reasoning behind why something is bigger/smaller, measuring quantity, applying comparisons to real world situations

Goal:
To provide students with a kinesthetic way to compare quantities and develop understanding of comparison language.

Materials Needed:

  1. Different containers
  2. Labels of “bigger” and “smaller”

Explanation/Summary:
The teacher will bring many different sized containers and will ask the students “If I was really thirsty, which would I want to use to drink water?” The goal is to press students to recognize that one container holds more than the other container. Then, have the students arrange different containers by which holds the most amount of water to the least amount of water. You can then prompt the students to draw and label something that can hold more than your water bottle.
