Common Core Standards:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.B.3: Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.

Targeted Needs of Student:

Adding and subtracting decimals, understanding budgets, working as a team, understanding value of money

Goal:

Providing students with real world application of adding and subtracting decimals.

Materials Needed:

1. Scratch paper
2. Menus from restaurants

Explanation/Summary:

Students will be in groups and given menus from restaurants. They will be challenged to have each member of their group order a meal (drink and dish) but they can collectively only use $30.00. Students must add and subtract decimals to be sure that they stay in their budget.
