Division of the Day

Grade Level(s):  4th Grade

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication
Measurement                                                             Representation
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability                    Connections

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.6: Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Representing division in different ways, creating a word problem to go with the division, practicing long division, relating division with multiplication, proving an answer is correct using different mathematical operations

Goal:
To provide students with a multi-modal way of representing division and proving an answer is correct

Materials Needed:

1.      Division of the Day sheet
2.      Writing utensils

Explanation/Summary:
Students will be given a division problem and asked to solve the division problem, check the answer using multiplication, and then to create a word problem using the division problem given. This can be done for morning work, early finishers, homework, or centers.
