Grade Level(s):  Kindergarten

Content Area:                                                                        Process Area:
Numbers and Operations                                           Problem-Solving
Algebra                                                           Reasoning and Proof
Geometry                                                                    Communication

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Comparing lengths, measuring using non-standard units, applying measurement to everyday things, using language such as “Less than” and “More than.”

Goal:
Practicing measuring objects to see if they are too long or too short.

Materials Needed:

  1. Crayons of all sizes (already used)
  2. Paperclips  (large)

Explanation/Summary:
Students will receive crayons or will use the basket of crayons in the middle of the table. One at a time, they will take crayons out and compare them to a paperclip. If the crayons are bigger or the same as the paperclip, then they will put them back in the basket and then if the crayon is smaller than the paperclip then the crayon will be kept to the side. This is a great activity to get read of crayons that have been used too much and are too small and also to help students use language such as “less than” and “more than.”
