Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.D.8: Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

Targeted Needs of Student:
Using a real world application to determine the perimeter and area, practice with perimeter and area, working with nonstandard units, integrating reading and math

Goal:
To provide students with a real world application of perimeter and area

Materials Needed:

1.      Spaghetti and Meatballs for All book
2.      Large Post it sheet
3.      Markers

Explanation/Summary:
The teacher will read the book Spaghetti and Meatballs for All and then she will make a chart on post it note paper. As a class, the students and the teacher will determine the perimeter and area for the table arrangements that are stated in the book. Each page adds more people to the amount of guests eating spaghetti, so there are many opportunities to find the area of the tables and the perimeter. The chart can be set up of guests seated, total number of guests, table arrangement, and then the perimeter and area of the tables.
